About the Branch
Winning double statutory redundancy as a right.
Contesting IPSA’s initial attempts to squeeze staff budgets, so now we have automatic annual uplifts and the promise of a wider pay review.
Campaigning for and receiving House funding for the Employee Assistance Programme helpline.
Demanding the setting up the Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme, which has now seen the first MP lose their seat for bullying their staff.
Winning equivalent benefits to House staff and mediation rights through the Speaker’s Conference.
Successfully campaigning against the widespread long-term use of unpaid interns, ensuring that this is now no longer seen as legitimate, and interns should now have paid contracts for limited periods of time.
Recognition from the Parliamentary Labour Party.
A Memorandum of Understanding with the House and IPSA, giving us the right to be consulted and a monthly opportunity to raise matters at the House of Commons Commission.
We were the first union to represent MP staff in both Parliament and the constituencies, with a solid track record of winning for members.
The first meeting of the Branch was in 1983 – and its first victory was to secure the first standard Contract of Employment for MPs’ staff.
